Bobby Jones achieved what no golfer has done before or since: he won all four major championships of his era in a single year, then retired at 28 because there was nothing left to prove. The 1930 Grand Slam — the U.S. Open, British Open, U.S. Amateur, and British Amateur — was accomplished as an amateur who never turned professional, who practiced law full-time and played golf as a hobby. Seven major titles in the modern count (13 counting the amateur championships) came across just eight competitive years. Then he walked away, co-founded Augusta National Golf Club, and created The Masters — the tournament that would become golf's most prestigious annual event. Jones didn't just play golf at the highest level; he built the institution that defines the sport's modern identity. The gentleman amateur who outplayed every professional alive.
