Biography

Sergey Bubka treated the pole vault like a personal playground, clearing heights no one thought possible and then raising the bar one centimeter at a time. He broke his own world record 35 times, a strategy that maximized bonus payments but also showed just how far ahead of his competition he was. The first man to clear six meters, he pushed the outdoor record to 6.14 meters, where it stood for over 20 years. Six world championship golds proved his consistency, even if Olympic glory eluded him. When Bubka planted his pole, the only question was how high he wanted to go.
