Diego Maradona's 1986 World Cup quarterfinal against England distilled everything brilliant and flawed about him into 90 minutes. The "Hand of God" goal - punched in with his fist - was cheating, pure and simple. Four minutes later came the "Goal of the Century," a 60-yard dribble through half the English team. Argentina won the tournament on his genius. He took Napoli, a club that had never won anything, to two Serie A titles against the northern giants. But the drugs, the weight, the chaos off the field eventually consumed the brilliance on it. He left the 1994 World Cup in disgrace after failing a drug test. His death in 2020 prompted national mourning in Argentina. The divine talent and the damaged man were inseparable.
