Rod Laver achieved something no other tennis player has done before or since: two Calendar Grand Slams, winning all four majors in a single year, first as an amateur in 1962 and again in the inaugural Open Era year of 1969. The gap between those achievements tells a story of its own - five years locked out of Grand Slam tennis because he turned professional, denied the chance to add to his legacy during what should have been his prime years. His left-handed game was revolutionary, heavy topspin creating angles opponents hadn't seen before. The nickname "Rocket" came from Australian coaching legend Harry Hopzman, recognizing Laver's explosive acceleration around the court. At just 5'8", he proved that size wasn't destiny, using exceptional footwork and wristy shot-making to dominate bigger, stronger opponents.
