Sachin Tendulkar carried the hopes of a billion people for 24 years. He debuted at 16, and by the time he retired, he had accumulated statistics that seem to belong to another sport entirely: 100 international centuries, 34,357 runs, 200 Test matches. Every time he batted, India stopped to watch. The pressure would have broken most players; Tendulkar simply scored runs, match after match, year after year. The 2011 World Cup victory, achieved at home in Mumbai, completed a story that seemed written for cricket's equivalent of a Bollywood ending. The Little Master proved that sometimes the weight of a nation can be carried on the shoulders of one man.
