Biography

Reggie White was ordained as a minister at 17, and his nickname "Minister of Defense" captured both his faith and his profession. On the field, he was perhaps the most devastating defensive end ever. The "hump move" - where he would engage a tackle, then use his extraordinary strength to toss them aside like a rag doll - became his signature. No one could block him one-on-one. The 198 sacks came despite him spending his prime years in the USFL, and despite offensive coordinators designing entire game plans around containing him. He was the centerpiece of the Eagles defense for years, then the centerpiece of the Packers' Super Bowl championship. His death at 43, from a respiratory ailment, stunned football. The minister who spent Sundays spreading the gospel of quarterback pressure left a congregation of highlights that still preach.
